Relationship of donor or materials to the DCL/NCR	The National Council of Negro Women—Durham Section is the Durham chapter of the nationally known organization for African-American women. Donor La Harve Johnson, a former president of the section, has a stated interest in making the section’s organizational records available to the Durham community.

Scope and Content:	The collection primarily contains programs from the section’s annual events, particularly the Harambee Breakfast and the Mary McLeod Bethune Recognition Program. Color photographs taken at these annual events are included, although subjects are largely unidentified. The collection also includes a small amount of administrative materials, including some correspondence, an issue of the section’s newsletter, and local newspaper clippings.

Biographical/Historical Note:	The National Council of Negro Women—Durham Section is dedicated to fostering sisterhood in, providing opportunities for, and uplifting Durham’s community of African-American women. The organization is a section of the National Council of Negro Women, which was organized in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, educator and social activist.
