Celebrating the Arts in Durham
About the exhibit
Celebrating the Arts in Durham is the inaugural project of the Museum of Durham History, Inc. The panels you see in this online exhibit have real-life fabric equivalents—2 ½ x 6’ fabric banners housed in decorative, hand-wrought metal frames.
They will be on display at various sites around Durham, NC, moving every few months.
To see images of individual banners, click on the title of the banner in the online exhibit.

About the Museum of Durham History
The Museum of Durham History, currently in the early stages of planning, will bring the captivating richness of Durham’s past alive for citizens and visitors. Educational opportunities for people of all ages and strong collaborations with the region’s universities, historic sites, libraries, and other historical and cultural organizations will be important facets of its work.
The Durham History Museum Planning Group was formed in 2006 to carry out the Durham Cultural Master Plan’s recommendation to establish a Durham history museum.
The Group envisions using carefully chosen artifacts, interpretive text, multimedia presentations, programs, a museum web site, and guided tours to tell Durham’s stories. A myriad of fascinating subjects are available for interpretation: tobacco, textile mills, civil rights, sports, architecture, the blues, early settlers, Indians—these are just the beginning. The Group anticipates eventually having a permanent location in downtown Durham. A site has not been selected.
