On October 15, 1956, Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke at Hillside High School. A young Baptist minister, King was receiving his first national attention for guiding a boycott of segregated city buses in Montgomery, Alabama. Invited by the Durham Business and Professional Chain as part of its Trade Week festivity, King told his audience, "Doors will be open to you now that were never open in the past. Be ready for opportunities." (photograph by Jim Sparks, courtesy of the Herald-Sun)
