Northgate Shopping Center, and downtown branches of businesses located there, were the first target of the Black Solidarity Committee's boycott in July 1968. By the middle of August, 14 other firms had been added to its do-not-patronize list as the committee sought to pressure the chamber of commerce and Durham Merchants Association to use their influence on behalf of its demands.
