Main Library Renovation Update – August 2011
In FY 2014-15, planning will occur to assess the additional space and equipment needs of the Main Library with construction occurring in the following two years. The project was postponed two years from the previous CIP and the funding source was changed from GO Bonds to COPS financing.
This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
In July of 2008 we kicked off a Planning & Programming Study of our Main Library. Presentations were held by our lead architect Chris Brasier of SmithGroup, with offices at American Tobacco in downtown Durham; along with architect Bill Ash who works with Chris as part of SmithGroup. They teamed with two library architects: Ed Lazaron of Design Collaborative, Virginia Beach and Jeffrey Scherer of Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle of Minneapolis. The study was a two-part study. First a building evaluation was conducted. SmithGroup had mechanical and structural engineers and others evaluate the existing building. Second a programming plan was conducted. Community meetings and focus groups were held throughout the summer and fall to assist with the programming plan.
