Job Description: Careful, preferably experienced proofreader needed to proof names and other information for an index of obituaries from the early 1900s Durham Herald newspapers. The information includes name, death date, cause of death, and interesting facts about the deceased.

Job Title: Photocopy Person
Job Description: Photocopy programs from funerals of prominent and everyday African Americans who died from the 1930s to the present. Since these programs contain a wealth of biographical information, you’ll learn about the fascinating history of the African-American community in Durham in the process.

Job Title: Excel Data Entry Person
Job Description: Enter into an Excel spreadsheet information from obituaries that other volunteers have transcribed from the Durham Herald newspaper. Knowledge of Excel needed.

Job Title: Photograph Processor
Job Description: Place portrait photos and negatives in archival envelopes and label each envelope with the name of the person pictured. Readable handwriting required. These photographs are from the Durham studio of Grace Parham Rhodes, who earned her living as a photographer in Durham from the 1930s to 1980s.

Job Title: Obituary indexer
Job Description: Scan microfilmed 1920s Durham Herald newspapers for obituaries and transcribe basic data about the deceased. Readable handwriting required. The information gathered will become an online obituary index.
