| Scope and Content: | The Debutante Cotillion and Christmas Ball Collection, 1955-1987, consists of programs, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia documenting the balls and other activities of the Debutante Ball Society, which encompasses Durham and Orange counties. Durham’s first Debutante Ball was held in 1955 at the Armory so that young girls might “make their formal bows to society under conditions as ideal as possible.” Each year, the Debutante Ball Society presented approximately 40 young women, placing emphasis on “integrity, honor, dignity, and society.” The collection includes programs, clippings of newspaper features, and other memorabilia for all years except 1959 and 1971. |
