Biographical/Historical Note:	The Powell Collection, 1935-1979, is composed of a scrapbook, papers, pamphlets, minutes, and correspondence documenting the professional activities of Dr. Benjamin E. Powell, chairman of the Board of Trustees, Durham County Public Library. Dr. Powell also acted as university librarian at Duke. The collection includes a 1947 North Carolina scrapbook, papers and pamphlets concerning the North Carolina Library Association and Durham Public Library, minutes from library board meetings, North Carolina State Library memoranda, and the correspondence of Dr. Powell. The collection covers the library bond issue of 1976 along with the construction of a new public library. Of particular interest are a 1963 report on the future of library service in Durham and a 1981 Duke University Library newsletter published in memory of Dr. Powell.
