Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Audiobooks – are available for checkout from all Durham County Libraries and Oasis. Check the library catalog, ask a librarian at the reference desk or audio visual desk if you are in the building, or call your local branch at one of these numbers to find out what is available. Audiobooks are also available for download through netLibrary. Call your local branch for the password.

Desktop Magnifier – a magnifier is available on the second floor of the Main Library across from the reference desk. Magnify your mail, a book or anything else printed on paper up to 45 times its normal size.

Handheld Magnifying Glasses – are available at the reference desk at each branch.

Largeprint Books are available at many branches.

The Library for the Blind and Visually Handicapped is located in Raleigh, North Carolina, but mails material all over the state. They loan books and magazines especially made for persons who cannot use regular printed material because of a visual or physical disability. In addition to large print, they also have braille books and audiobooks from the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Zoomtext Screen Enlargement and Screen Reader is available on the second floor of the Main Library across from the reference desk. This software allows individuals who are visually impaired or completely blind to access the internet, send email and use Microsoft Office Suite. If you would like to set up an appointment to learn to use the Zoomtext software please call 560-0111 or email Kathy Makens.

Services for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

IP Relay - all computers are capable of using IP relay which allows a deaf or hard of hearing user to place a phone call over the internet. You type in the phone number and what you would like to say, and the operator will communicate it to the person at the other end of the line.

Assistive Listening Devices - available for use in meeting rooms at the Main Library and at the branches. To ensure availability, request in advance from the AV Department, 560-0140.

Signing Available for Library Sponsored Programs - Must be requested at least two weeks in advance. Call the Marketing Department at 560-0151.

Video Relay Services - Reference computer number one in the Main Library can accomodate the user's own webcam for video relay services which allows patrons to sign to an operator over the internet who will interpret to the person you are calling.

Wheelchair Accessible Bookmobile - Bookmobile equipped with automated wheelchair lift.
