Poetry for Pizza
How would you like to trade one poem for one piece of pizza?
Here's how it works: You attend a Poetry for Pizza event and write or read-aloud a poem. The poem can be an original work or one of your favorite poems. At the end of the event, everyone who shared a poem gets a slice of pizza. That's it. Easy isn't it?
Keep checking the teen section of the DCL calendar to see when more Poetry for Pizza events are added.
Here are some original poems written by participants in recent Poetry for Pizza events:
My Poem
by: Mariam
Middle School, East Regional
Love is part of life right,
well yes if love wasn’t
around you wouldn’t get
appreciated sometimes but
love is a great feeling you
feel wonderful, so full of
life, that all you think
about is that special someone
that brings you love so when
you feel lost or you need
something to think love will
be there & everywhere.
I Am
by: Keimora
Elementary, McDougald Terrace
I am Keimora.
I am pretty like a rose.
I am smart like a genius.
I am strong like a bear.
I am loud like a lion.
I am graceful like a swan.
I am Keimora.
I Am
by: Ayindee
Elementary, McDougald Terrace
I am wonderful and fun.
I wonder how it feels to be a librarian.
I hear applause when I finish school.
I see pretty people.
I want to be a fasion designer.
I am sweet, hardworking.
I pretend I don't hear mean things.
I feel happy all the time.
I worry sometimes.
I cry when I'm worried.
I am cute.
I understand almost everything.
I say nice things.
I dream everyday.
I try to be brave even when it's hard.
I Am
by: Timothy
Elementary, McDougald Terrace
I am a flying bird.
I wonder about very special things.
I hear cars, trucks.
I see butterflies, airplanes.
I want lots of video games.
I am a cool person.
I pretend to be lots of cool things.
I feel happy around people.
I worry about my mom.
I cry when people fight.
I am very smart.
I understand things when they can not be told.
I say stuff that is good.
I dream about good things.
I try my best on a lot of things.
As the Blue Changes Over to Black
by: Brandy E.
High School, East Regional
As the blue changes over to black
At the edge of silver a weariness I can’t describe
Tip-Toe carefully
The hiding place of rain shivers underneath
The promise of tomorrow
Shadow Tales
by: Brandy E.
High School, East Regional
Bodiless voices
Taunting lies and unspoken truths
Hidden in a whisper of the wind
Gone out of the corner of your eye
What once was there is no more
A secret, a lie
Hear what you want; hear what’s not meant to be heard
Tales of growing old
Left behind
Stories of broken hearts
Litter the ground
The shadows twist and crawl
Over your skin
Working their way inside
Dissecting what they please
Enter sane
Never leave whole
Silver Splash
by: Brandy E.
High School, East Regional
Silver splash
Of a dreams requirement
Hidden away in a shadow
Drifted awake by a whisper
Falling Apart
by: By JulieAnn M.
High School, East Regional
Don’t ask me if everything’s alright
‘Cause it’s not
A dream is shattered
Because one man is dying
Don’t ask me if I’m okay
‘Cause I’m falling apart
Because one man is dying
I look around at all my worldly possessions
And I’d give it all away
Just to have more time
With the one man who is dying
The only thing I’d keep
Would be the blue book
Because he gave it to me.
I may be smiling but it’s
Only temporary
I may appear happy
But it’s just a mask
To hide the fact
That I’m
Falling apart.
Swords
by: By JulieAnn M.
High School, East Regional
Like a piece of metal
Like a dragon’s talon
Like a twisted fate
Like a sharp edge
Like a ceremony
Like a Chinese fan
Like a sign of wealth, stupid idiots
Like a kitchen item, often overlooked
Like an inheritance
Like a shadow in the dark
Like an item on a vanity table, often not seen
Like a drawing
Like a carving
Like a book
Like a word.
